Although he played Bob in JAWS 2, Billy was originally cast as the son of Quint (Robert Shaw). Outside of the sequel for JAWS he is best known for starring in his 24 plays, appearing on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and in the early Tom Cruise film, Taps.
TV acting work has included Anything But Love, Life With Lucy, American Dad, Martin, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and That Girl Lay Lay. Van Zandt is also an award winning TV writer and producer, and author of the best-selling memoir Get in the Car, Jane.
